Social Media Influencers Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Some experts said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Reaction and Material Elimination

According to the social media company, the service has removed violative material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After minutes of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these groups, messages show black plastic packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
