Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

Border Security Response

Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.

Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
